Description
Broadleaf plantain is a hardy perennial with an extensive fibrous root system. The plant is drought hardy, shade tolerant, and moderately frost tolerant. The plant forms a round, flat rosette of leaves, making it a useful understorey plant in a food forest or even a component of a ‘weedy lawn’, as it will survive regular mowing provided the crown is left intact. Leaves and seeds are edible year round, and are usually cooked although young leaves are tender enough to be eaten raw. Leaves and seeds are a good source of a range of vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium and magnesium. Whilst not native, this hardy plant has become naturalized throughout much of Australia and is not considered a noxious weed. Readily self – seeds.
Care
Thrives in sun but tolerates shade. Water well until established, after which watering may be require during very hot periods.
