Description

Description:

A vigorous climber producing large green beans that can be eaten cooked or raw following beautiful bright red flowers. Generally grown on a trellis although will also run along the ground. An underrated perennial, this vigorous climber produces an underground tuber before it dies back during the colder months. The tuber is edible however if left in the ground it will regrow in Spring for years to come, hence the name seven – year bean.

Care:

Requires consistent watering. A well – draining soil with a pH of 6 – 7 will allow the plant to flourish and mulching is recommended to keep soil moisture consistent, however this legume will happily grow in poor soils and produce it’s own Nitrogen. Happily grows in full – sun or in part – shade. When planting, plant the soil block 5 – 10cm underneath the soil to support the plant’s stem, and provide support to ensure the stem does not snap. Water daily for the first two weeks. Will require consistent watering throughout the growing period so mulching is recommended to conserve water.
