Description

A very vigorous, perennial gourd native to the American uplands and widely cultivated throughout Asia and South America. Attractive white to violet flowers are followed by large, green fruit with a distinctive mottled green skin and four pale grey stripes. Fruit has a mild flavour and distinctive texture, separating into ‘noodles’ similar to spaghetti squash. Seeds are large and can be roasted and eaten. Vines die back during the colder months, but the plant will re – grow in Spring from an underground tuber.

Care

Needs plenty of space and sun, and well to medium draining soil. Trails along the ground like a pumpkin. Can be trellised but the fruit are heavy enough to need additional support. Water well until established and then water regularly throughout the growing period. The plant will benefit from regular fertilizer.
