Description
A classic Italian sweet basil, the king of herbs. Delicious in almost any application, and the perfect accompaniment to tomatoes. A bit fragile in the garden, but, in my opinion, worth it.
CARE
Frost – tender, shallow – rooted annual with very limited drought tolerance. One thing sweet basil does have in it’s favor is a resistance to waterlogging. Often described as a sun – loving herb, in most of Australia it will do best in part shade. We recommend selecting a shady position and amending the soil with compost and mulching well, or growing in a pot and watering daily. Can grow into a large 1+meter high bush if cared for. Likes regular feeding with a Nitrogen – rich fertilizer, but consistent water in the root zone is generally the most important factor for good growth. The plant will usually die back after setting seed, so prune flowers while the weather is warm to keep it alive as long as possible. Sweet basil rarely survives Winter, but you can save seed, take cuttings, or bring the plant indoors for the Winter. Seed saving is usually considered the most reliable of these methods.
