Description
Description
Another dual – purpose squash, Tromboncino can be eaten young and green like a zucchini or allowed to mature and eaten like a pumpkin. These vigorous annual vines are the same species as butternut pumpkins, but they grow looooooong, with all of the seeds in a relatively small cavity at one end of the squash. As with butternut pumpkins, can be allowed to sprawl along the ground (which typically results in crazy curly fruit) or trellised (the squash will be straighter).
Care
Chose a position in full sun or part shade. The plant can be sunk 5 – 10cm below the soil surface, but try to avoid having the young leaves touch the soil directly. Requires regular watering and will perform best in soil enriched with compost and / or with regular fertilizing. Flowers are large. Even if pollinators are present, you may need to manually pollinate in order to get plenty of fruit set.
