Description

Description

A hardy, deciduous tree to 15 meters, Moringa tree is best known for it’s highly nutritious leaves which can be eaten raw or cooked. It also produces long seed pods in Summer giving it it’s other name, the drumstick tree; these seed pods are edible if harvested immature and cooked. The outer layer can be quite tough so typically only the inner pith and seeds are eaten.

Care

Thrives in sun or part shade. Plant so that the top of the soil block is level with the surface of the soil to avoid stem rot. Backfill with original soil or amend with minimal amounts of compost – Moringa is highly tolerant of poor soils but requires stability around the root zone. Staking is likely to be necessary and the tree will need to be watered regularly in hot weather for at least the first year until well established. Once established, the tree is very drought tolerant although may still require watering during very hot weather if growing in very sandy soils. The tree is tolerant of heavy pruning, particularly during Winter when it is dormant.
