Description
The wild relative of modern domestic tomatoes, currant tomatoes are a perfect backyard variety for low maintenance and waterwise gardens. Despite being a separate species, currant tomatoes have the taste of a strong, sweet cherry tomato, an can interbreed with domestic tomatoes to produce tougher and stronger – tasting hybrids. They are disease resistant, drought resistant, and more cold tolerant than most domestic varieties. They grow as perennials in frost – free areas. Their thicker skins make them largely resistant to fruit fly and other pests. They grow on long, vigorous vines that will take up an entire garden bed if left to their own devices, but can be kept in check with a tomato cage and regular pruning. Their small size and strong, sweet flavour makes them ideal for sauces, salads, canning and fermenting and they produce over a long season, all with minimal care.

Care
Full sun recommended. Reasonably well – draining soil is a must. When planting, sink the seedling 5 – 10 cm below the soil surface level to support the stem and ensure the roots are in a zone with available moisture (without burying the leaves!). Adventitious roots will quickly form along the buried stem. More tolerant of poor soils than most tomato varieties but will really take off in soil amended with compost and / or with regular fertilizing. Will require regular watering during hot periods but withstands short periods of drought. Mulching recommended. Self – seeds very readily.
