Description
Descripton:
This extremely hardy native groundcover gives us edible leaves and berries! Leaves have a taste similar to English spinach and like English spinach tend to be naturally high in oxalates, so should be blanched if eaten in large quantities. Hundreds of tiny, salty – sweet red berries are produced in Summer and these can be eaten fresh or used in recipes. They have a taste like salted pomegranite. Tends towards a bushy habit in a shaded area but only grows to approximately 10cm high in full sun, which makes it an ideal low maintenance groundcover for a verge or a waterwise garden bed. Any berries you miss provide food for native birds and insects.
Care:
Plant so that the top of the soil block is level with the soil surface, in a sunny position. Water daily for the first two weeks to get the plant established, after which minimal watering will be required. Tolerant of most soil conditions including highly acidic / alkaline soils and of high salinity.
