Description
A bisexual (i.e. producing both male and female flowers) variety producing large, sweet fruit on a short – lived tree that can grow to 5+ meters high, although it typically starts producing fruit when around 1.5 – 2 meters high. Papaya flowers and young leaves are also edible; they have a somewhat bitter flavour and are typically cooked along with other ingredients in stir – fry’s and curries.
Care
Full sun is generally recommended however papayas tolerate part shade when small. Tolerant of moderately boggy soil. Plant level with the soil surface and water well for the first few weeks. Regular feeding and watering is necessary for the plant to thrive in dry climates, and mulching is recommended. Papayas also thrive in large containers.
